How to Install Exterior doors or a Pre-assembled Door

Installing a pre-assembled door is a job you can do yourself if you have some skill in the DIY world; although you will still need some help, these types of doors are usually heavy.

How to choose doors for the exterior of the house

The different types of doors available have their advantages and disadvantages. The best door for your purposes will depend on which features – aesthetics, durability, energy savings, or price – are most important to you. Usually, some types of doors are also available with decorative glass. In this sense, most exterior doors have insulating glass to save energy; others may have a bevelled glass with a silk mesh or tinted with genuine brass pipe (strips that join the segmented mirror).

Wooden doors are popular primarily for their appearance and texture. Hardwood doors with a natural finish and decorative glass are among the most elegant and expensive. Wooden doors can be stained or painted. One disadvantage of wood is that it shrinks and swells with changes in the weather.

Processed wood doors have laminated centres to reduce the potential for these problems, but the finish on all wood doors must maintain to avoid damage over time. Also, in general, wooden doors are heavier, making handling before installation a bit more complicated.

Steel doors are also popular. In the centre, they have insulating foam and save a lot of energy. In addition, they are highly resistant to shrinkage, swelling, warping and cracking.

On the other hand, they do not have the same aesthetic qualities or appearance as wooden doors.

Fibreglass doors have many advantages of steel, with the added benefit that they can be stained to have a similar appearance to a wooden door. Although they are more expensive than steel doors, they are far from giving the look and texture of wood.

How to install the exterior doors in Block

The general principles related to installing a pre-assembled or block exterior door are shown below. Installation instructions may vary slightly between different manufacturers. For that reason, always refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for the last word when installing the door.

How to prepare the wall opening

Remove the new door assembly from the box. Some pre-assembled doors, for shipping, are fastened with screws installed through the jambs or flashing. For these drives, the screws must remove. Other units are provided with a bracket for shipping that should not clear until the door is in place in the opening. If in doubt, consult the manual that comes with the door.

Remove the current door and remove the frame to leave the opening in the wall (if applicable).

Ensure the opening is upright and that the lower sill (the floor where the door sill will rest) is level. Level the lower threshold if necessary using a bevelled board or shims. You may need a spacer board if you must leave ample space between the door and an exceptionally raised surface, such as a very thick carpet.

The opening must be at least 2 centimetres wider and higher than the dimensions of the outer frame of the pre-assembled door system to be installed.

Apply two lines of heavy caulk along the lower sill, one inch inside the front and back edges of where the sill will place. Spread the caulk a couple of inches down the sides of the frame.

How to place the Exterior doors

Place the door in the opening. Read the bottom and top toward you first, then tilt the door into place.

Centre the door in the opening and snap the frame firmly into place at the lowest part of the wall opening.

How to Square and Secure the Assembly

Now that the door is where it will be installed, shim the rest of the door frame to keep it in place. In this step, place shims on the hinge side of the door behind all hinge attachment points on the door frame. Later, the door will be permanently attached to the wall opening at these points.

Adjust the shims and frame until the door hinge side jamb is plumb in both directions. There should always be the same gap (about 1/8 inch) between the post and the edge of the door.

After making these adjustments, temporarily nail the door in place with finish nails through the hinge jamb near where the hinge will be attached. Do not drive the pins in.

Remove any brackets attached to the door to ship to you, then open and close the door to test its operation. It should work freely.

From outside the house with the door closed, make sure there is even contact between the front and the weatherstrip attached to the frame opposite the hinge jamb. Make adjustments if necessary, adjusting the post in and out at the top or bottom.

From inside the house with the door closed, examine the edges of the door. Adjust the lock side jamb until there is an even gap (about 1/8 inch) between the door edges and the jamb fronts.

Install a sturdy shim behind the lock.

Secure the jambs permanently. Begin by driving 3 ″ screws through the shims where the hinges go into the hinge jamb. Continue around the pre-assembled door, securing the remaining posts with screws or nails (as recommended by the manufacturer) that you will drive through the shims.

Drive screws or nails through shims to prevent the door frame from warping when pressing against an unsupported area. Occasionally check the door while doing this step to ensure the door assembly remains snug. Drive screws through shim in place of a lock.

How to finish the job

Insulate the edges of the door frame with flexible fibreglass or low-expansion foam insulation. Foam that expands too much can distort the door frame inward, preventing the door from operating.

Attach the inside trim according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Caulk all seams and intersections of trim and trim, particularly along the seams where the frame meets the exterior wall, with paint grade caulk.

Install weatherstrip to door base as directed by door manufacturer (if required).

Step five

The last step is to beautify the door. Inside place jambs with mounting adhesive after levelling the surface, while, on the outside, it evens out with the wall by leaning on plaster or mortar. Thus, there will be no trace that you have done a small work in your house, no neighbour will bother, and the door will be fabulous.
